About this piece

Born in Austria, Erwin Pearl came to the United States with his uncle after WWII where he studied jewelry design, became a highly skilled diamond cutter, and founded his jewelry company in 1952. For five successive years, Erwin won first place at the prestigious Diamond International Award in London and, although he later became known for his stylish costume jewelry, he started out designing exquisite pieces fashioned with precious stones and metals. This extraordinary brooch is such a piece. With its sculptural wings stretched wide and sparkling with round brilliant-cut diamonds, a fantastical creature takes hold of a glistening 2.50 carat bright blue cabochon turquoise, creating a distinctive shape punctuated by color and light. As one of Erwin's earlier pieces (c. 1960), it is a rare collectible and intriguing conversation piece. Total diamond weight, .55 carat. Crafted in 18K yellow gold (18K white gold used for diamond settings).
