About this necklace
During the time of Italian Renaissance master painter Raphael, the 24-hour day was divided into 12 increments, and, among his other renowned works, he produced a series of paintings depicting the hours. This exquisitely carved onyx cameo, surrounded by a 'necklace' of natural pearls* and glinting rose-cut diamonds, portrays the Third Hour. Draped in diaphanous garb, the graceful nymph carries a censer, possibly indicating that this is the hour for the solemn ceremonies of religious service, and, above her head, a star-like element represents the planet Jupiter, the father and king of the gods. The extraordinary composition suspends from an 18-inch chain by way of a tulip-like bail embellished with rose cuts and a pair of pearls. Sublime. Total diamond weight, .32 carat. Hand fabricated in silver over 18K gold - circa 1890. *Condition note: her tiny nose has a chip and one small pearl is a replacement cultured pearl.
