About this necklace

A cameo is a glyptograph or bas-relief carving, usually depicting a scene or portrait, for use in jewelry and decorative arts. The technical definition of a cameo translates into exquisite creations, and this alluring pendant is one of them. Carved from carnelian (hardstone), a classical beauty--crowned with a laurel wreath--is presented in high relief against a soft pinkish translucent background. The lovely portrait in profile is surrounded by a hand-engraved dimensional frame, punctuated by glimmering rose-cut diamonds and leaf-like embellishments effectively accented with black enamel. Formerly a brooch, this masterful work of art is now ready to grace your neckline. Hand fabricated in 18K gold, circa 1880. New chain measures 18 inches.
