About this piece

According to Roman mythology, the sunrise is announced by Aurora, the goddess of the dawn. In this hand-fabricated cameo brooch, she is masterfully carved from shell and is depicted dropping roses, a representation of the phrase 'rosy-fingered dawn' that describes the early morning and is found in Homer's The Odyssey. The exquisite carving, based on renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's famous bas-relief, 'Day,' is set in an ornate frame of tri-color 14K gold (yellow, rose, and green) embellished with flowers and trailing leaves. A lovely way to consider the light of day. When a set is in order, we have matching earrings: 20-1-12911. By way of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1872-1922.
