About this necklace
The venerable American jeweler, J.E. Caldwell, was renowned for his extraordinary Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewels and here we have a rare Edwardian masterpiece, a sumptuous and spectacularly sparkling pendant/brooch that is exemplary of his extraordinary designs. At its center, a stunning 44.50 carat lozenge-shaped cerulean blue aquamarine (about as fine as they come) gleams like sun-kissed waters against an intricately worked 'canvas' of scrolls, graceful vines, and sweeping swags that effervesce with a breathtaking array of European and single-cut diamonds, while bezel-set drops and trefoil dangles--dazzling with diamonds--add light-flashing motion. As is fitting, this utterly captivating confection suspends from an exquisite platinum diamond chain that adjusts from 16 to 18 inches. Astonishing. Total diamond weight, 18.55 carats. Hand fabricated in platinum over 18K gold, circa 1900.
